Tattoo Aftercare Instructions

Follow these instructions to help your tattoo heal properly.

Bandage Removal

  • If your bandage is black, leave it on for a minimum of 2 hours. For Saniderm or clear bandages, leave it on for 3–5 days.
  • Blood plasma may form under the bandage, which is normal. If your skin is irritated along the edge of the bandage, remove it immediately, as you may be allergic to the adhesive.

Bandage Removal Process

  • Gently remove the bandage(s) under warm running water to reduce the risk of damaging the tattoo.
  • Once the bandage is completely removed, do not re-bandage the tattoo.

Cleaning the Tattoo

  • Gently wash the tattoo with unscented soap and warm water.
  • After cleaning, pat the tattoo dry with a clean towel or paper towel, and allow it to air dry for about 5–10 minutes.

Applying Ointment

  • You can use organic coconut oil, shea butter, or any plant-based lotion.
  • For coconut oil, shea butter, or plant-based lotion, apply as much as you like. If you choose a commercial ointment like Aquaphor, apply a tiny amount 2–4 times a day.
  • Apply the healing ointment daily for about 10–14 days.

General Care

  • Avoid exercising for at least 5 days, and ideally until your tattoo is completely healed.
  • Do not pick or scratch the tattoo while it’s peeling.
  • Avoid soaking the tattoo for 3 weeks. This means no swimming, baths, hot tubs, or saunas.
  • Do not shave or wax the tattooed area until it’s fully healed.
  • Avoid applying alcohol, Vaseline, petroleum jelly, or sunscreen to a fresh tattoo.
  • Keep the tattoo away from direct sunlight for the first 3 weeks. After healing, use a high-SPF sunscreen.

Ink Discharge

  • During the first 3 days, some ink may come out with plasma. This is normal, but it’s essential to use clean shirts and sheets.
